Meet the Maker: Amy, Kinfolk Pantry

Kinfolk Pantry creates thoughtfully designed playdough tools made from plant-based materials, right here in Tropical North Queensland.

I'm Andrea, the founder of Mini Marketa, and this is the fourth article in our Meet the Maker series, where we talk to the people behind the toys and tools our kids use every day.

Amy runs Kinfolk Pantry with her family up in Tropical North Queensland. They make playdough cutters, stamps and tools from plant-based PLA, a material derived from corn starch instead of traditional petroleum-based plastic. Everything is designed in-house, starting from hand-drawn sketches, and much of their production is powered by solar energy.

Kinfolk Pantry caught my eye for two reasons. First, the nostalgia factor: it reminded me of the organic playdough my own mum used to make for me when I was little (all I was missing were these beautiful cutters!). Second, their commitment to sustainability and innovative use of plant-based PLA.

After speaking to Amy, I discovered there's even more to love, like how entrepreneurial their family is. Read the full interview below:

How did Kinfolk Pantry come about? What inspired you to create eco-friendly playdough tools?

Kinfolk Pantry actually began before us, we purchased the business when it was still quite young, and over the past four years we've gradually shaped it into what it is today.

When we stepped into the brand, we saw incredible potential. As a family drawn to slow, nature-inspired childhood and sensory play, it felt naturally aligned. We refined the range, strengthened the sustainability focus, and began creating new designs that reflected our values.

As a mum, I've always loved how simple yet powerful playdough can be, encouraging imagination, creativity and calm. Today, Kinfolk Pantry is a reflection of our family's commitment to sustainability, open-ended play, and thoughtful design.

Your cutters and stamps are made from plant-based PLA, which is such a great alternative to plastic. Can you tell us a bit about how you chose that material, and what your design process entails?

Our cutters and stamps are made from plant-based PLA, derived from renewable resources like corn starch rather than traditional petroleum-based plastics. While no material is perfect, PLA allows us to create durable, lightweight tools while making a more conscious choice.

Using plant-based materials aligns naturally with our brand, we're passionate about thoughtful design and sustainability, and creating products families can feel good about bringing into their homes.

All of our products are designed in-house. Each piece begins as a hand-drawn sketch, often inspired by nature, seasonal themes, or open-ended storytelling. We then turn that sketch into a 3D design, prototype it, and refine it to ensure it works beautifully for little hands.

Our goal is simple: to create timeless tools that spark imagination and support meaningful play.

What's your most popular product, and why do you think parents and kids love it?

Our mini cutter sets are consistently our most popular, especially themes like ocean, dinosaurs, and seasonal collections.

Parents love that they come as complete sets (usually around six cutters), which makes it easy to gift or build a themed activity. They're affordable, lightweight, and easy to store.

Kids love them because they invite storytelling. One cutter turns into a whole world, an ocean scene, a construction site, a fairy garden. That imaginative layer is what makes play meaningful.

I think families also appreciate that they're durable, Australian-made, and created by a small family business rather than a big factory.

Sustainability is clearly at the heart of what you do. What does that look like day to day in your business?

Sustainability is something we try to consider in the everyday decisions we make as a business.

For us, that means using plant-based PLA, manufacturing in-house in Tropical North Queensland, producing in small batches to minimise waste, and keeping our packaging minimal wherever possible. Much of our production is powered by solar energy, which feels especially fitting living and working in the tropics.

We're also mindful to design timeless pieces that can be enjoyed season after season.

It extends beyond our products, too. As parents, we're conscious of modelling thoughtful consumption for our own children and showing that small businesses can operate with care and intention.

We're always learning and improving, sustainability is an ongoing journey for us.

What's one thing you wish more parents knew when choosing play accessories for their kids?

That less can be more.

Children don't need overflowing toy rooms, they need thoughtfully designed tools that invite imagination. A few well-designed pieces can inspire hours of open-ended play.

I also wish more parents knew how powerful sensory play is for regulation, focus, and emotional development. Playdough isn't just messy fun, it supports fine motor skills, creativity, and even nervous system calm.

Choosing quality over quantity really does make a difference.

Anything else you'd like to share?

At its heart, Kinfolk Pantry is about connection, connection to childhood, to creativity, and to conscious choices.

We're so grateful to be part of a community of families and stockists who value sustainability and intentional play. Every order supports our small family, and that never feels lost on us.

We hope our tools bring a little magic to everyday moments.

There's a line in Amy's answers that I keep coming back to: "One cutter turns into a whole world." What I love about this is that it highlights what good toys do. They don't tell your kid what to play. They leave the door open.

What a wonderful interview, thank you for taking us behind the scenes Amy!
